Derry Girls Animated (Unofficial)

This project was completed during the final year of my animation degree. I assumed the role off concept artist, storyboard artist, animatic and sound editor, background artist, and animator.

  • Four person project.

  • Production time of 10 weeks.

  • Used TV Paint and the Adobe Suite.

Concept Artwork

A peek at concept art I created! With the first idea, I played with stained glass, kaleidoscopes, and religious motifs. The second went for a teenage scrap-book diary feel, which we ended up combining with another comic-book slice-of-life style concept to create the feel for the final product.

Storyboard

After creating story beats together, we split up and I worked on the the bus-stop and map section of the storyboard. It was a fun challenge to work out how to transition from the comic-style into a diary/hand drawn style. I also then put the final animatic together from everyone's parts, along with sourcing and editing music.

Backgrounds

Three of us worked together on the long panning background section. I worked on the layout. The bus stop and school hill sections were lined by Eloise and Inga respectively, whilst the entire map section and all colour was done by me.

I was also responsible for creating paper assets to use throughout the animation to give it a scrap-book feel. I scanned paper from home, and then took it into photoshop to edit and create different shaped strips with depth using the embossing feature.

Animation

I did a mix of rough, key, and in-between animation. I fully animated the bridge section and all the assets for the map section. I did roughs and keys for the bus-stop section, and in-betweened/coloured the group at the hill.
